PacifiCorp Foundation announces Oregon education grants

PORTLAND, Ore. — In June 2005 the PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning awarded more than $100,000 to 15 nonprofit education programs throughout Oregon. It also awarded $25,000 to small capital improvement projects in Astoria, Bend and Lebanon.

The Foundation’s education grants are one of four groups of awards each year. Other award categories are civic and community, arts and culture, and health and human services. 
 
“We believe strongly in the value of education to lift up individuals and give them a chance to thrive,” said Isaac Regenstreif, executive director of the PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning. “The projects we’re helping are bringing huge benefits to Oregon communities both large and small.”

The Foundation’s mission is to foster strategic sustainable learning initiatives that serve the best aspirations of individuals, organizations and communities, and that enhance and develop their capabilities to address significant challenges and opportunities.

The following are organizations were awarded grants:

Education Grants

  • Benton Literacy Council (Corvallis) - Summer Reading program, $500
  • Chamber Latino Network (Medford) - College scholarship program, $5,000
  • Concordia University (Portland) - Nursing Skills program, $7,500 
  • Fishtrap, Inc. (Enterprise) - Connecting with Schools programs for K-12, $5,500   
  • Grants Pass High School Foundation (Grants Pass) - 'College Dreams' College Preparation and Alumni Mentoring Project, $3,000 
  • Junior Achievement Columbia Empire (Portland) - program support, $15,000 
  • Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement (Portland) - LISTOS alternative learning center summer program, $2,500 
  • Oregon Independent College Foundation (Portland) - scholarship program, $10,000 
  • Portland State University Graduate School of Education (Portland) - summer tutoring program, $5,000 
  • Saturday Academy (Portland) - Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering  Summer Symposium, $8,000 
  • Schoolhouse Supplies (Portland) - Tools for Schools, $3,000 
  • ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum (Ashland) - Support to increase the availability to outreach programs, $5,120  
  • SMART (Portland) – program support throughout Oregon, $20,000 
  • Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism (Pendleton) - expand programs to Pendleton area,$4,250
  • University of Oregon - Materials Science Institute (Eugene) - K-12 Science Education Outreach program, $8,750 

Small Community Capital Projects

  • J Bar J Youth Services (Bend) –purchase/renovate facility for integrated homeless youth programs, $10,000 
  • Lebanon Community Hospital Foundation (Lebanon) - expand health training through new Samaritan Health Career Training Center, $10,000
  • Tapiola Playground Project (Astoria) - rebuild playground equipment, $5,000 

While the Foundation allocates most of its grants to nonprofits that support learning projects, it does maintain flexibility to invest in programs and projects that best serve community interests.To apply for a grant, and to review specific eligibility requirements, please go to www.pacificorpfoundation.org
