CRESWELL, Ore. — The Creswell Library received a $2,725 grant from Pacific Power’s charitable arm, the PacifiCorp Foundation
for Learning, for its “Tools for Learning” literacy program.
“Tools for Learning” is the library’s program to foster learning in homes with very young children. The library will provide
pre-literacy workshops to new parents to promote reading opportunities to babies and children under six years. Workshops include
storytime, “ready to read” activities, and information about health, nutrition and safety.
“Parents are the first and most important teacher to their children,” said Sheila Hale, board president of the Creswell Public
Library Foundation. “There is a limited, crucial period when the brain is growing: and reading, talking, singing and playing
all help stimulate it. We’re all grateful for the PacifiCorp Foundation’s support.”
“Tools for Learning” is a perfect example of an educational program that pays huge dividends for large and small Oregon communities,”
said Doris Johnston, regional community manager for Pacific Power. “Our foundation has years of experience funding successful
early literacy programs, such as Oregon’s Project Optimize, and this is exactly the kind of program that will help young children
develop a real thirst for learning.”
In its latest round of grants, the PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning awarded nearly $63,000 civic and community grants to
14 nonprofit education programs throughout Oregon. It also awarded $12,500 to small capital improvement projects in Portland,
Moro and Medford.
