Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb Disposal

Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) are highly efficient. They use 75 percent less energy and last 7 to 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs. However, because CFLs contain tiny amounts of mercury (about five milligrams per bulb), proper disposal is important.

To find out where to dispose of CFLs:

  • Contact the hazardous waste handling facility in your area.
    • In California, Oregon and Washington, customers can call toll free at 1-800-RECYCLE.
    • In the Portland, Oregon area, CFLs can be taken to one of Metro's hazardous waste facilities at 6161 NW 61st Avenue in Portland or 2001 Washington Street in Oregon City.
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also has a map to help you find fluorescent light bulb recycling programs in your area.
  • LampRecycle.org , developed by the Lamp Section of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, along with lamp recyclers, provides lamp recycling contacts and other useful information.

If you can’t find an accommodating recycler in your area, it’s recommended that you wrap the CFL in two sealed plastic bags before placing the bulb in your normal trash. CFLs should not be incinerated.
