YAKIMA, Wash. — Members of local social service and health agencies met at Pacific Power’s Yakima office on November 29 and
30, to pick up thousands of knitted and crocheted clothing items for distribution this winter to families in need of assistance.
Pacific Power Regional Community Manager Clark Satre, several volunteers and local community agency workers assisted in loading
the items for delivery to the distribution points.
Project Warm Up is an annual service provided by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). About 135 RSVP volunteers
in the Yakima area donated their time and talents, knitting and crocheting approximately 5,000 items including hats, mittens,
lap robes, afghans and baby clothing.
Pacific Power – which has been involved with Project Warm Up since the program’s inception in 1989 – annually donates $6,000
to RSVP for yarn. Pacific Power also donates space to store completed items until they are distributed.
Participating agencies included many area elementary schools as well as social service agencies including the Salvation Army,
Yakima Health District, Coalition for Homeless, the Yakima Valley Farmworker’s Clinic and others. These agencies identify
low-income, elderly and migrant individuals and families who need assistance with warm clothing and blankets and distribute
thousands of items throughout the area each year.
