The makers of “Tofurky” go green

Turtle Island Foods switches to 100% renewable Blue Sky

HOOD RIVER, Ore. — The makers of “Tofurky” are extending their commitment toward a healthy environment by offsetting 100 percent of their power consumption with Pacific Power’s Blue Sky renewable energy. Turtle Island Foods, which provides premium soy products, is a visionary partner in the green power program, buying 210 blocks of wind energy every month.

“Blue Sky allows us to reduce the environmental impact of our production facility while also helping to encourage the development of new renewable energy resources for our region,” said Jaime Athos, Turtle Island Foods’ director of operations.

Blue Sky allows customers to help bring more renewable energy into the region. Energy generated from wind, biomass and geothermal helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Wind produces no air pollutants, wastewater, smog or acid rain.

“Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Columbia River Gorge and the Cascade Mountains, we have a constant reminder of our responsibility to maintain the health of the environment for future generations to enjoy,” he said.

Over 12 months, Turtle Island Foods’ renewable purchase reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 252 tons, which is like not driving 539,910 miles or planting 49,497 trees.

“We are a relatively small company, but our business is growing very quickly,” Athos said. “Our participation in the Blue Sky program is only one part of a broad effort to manage that growth responsibly. In addition, we have also made recent investments in high-efficiency, low-emission production equipment and continue to use recycled and recyclable materials to package our products.”

Buying just one, 100-kilowatt hour increment of Blue Sky Block, costs $1.95 per month. Oregon customers can also choose Blue Sky Usage (in which customers receive their equivalent energy usage from renewable resources) or Blue Sky Habitat (in which customers buy renewable energy, plus make a $2.50 monthly donation to The Nature Conservancy of Oregon to preserve native fish habitat). Large customers can buy renewable power in bulk at a discount through Blue Sky QS.

Customers can sign up for Blue Sky renewable power by calling Pacific Power at 1-800-769-3717 or by visiting www.pacificpower.net/bluesky.
