Great Harvest takes natural approach to energy use

DRAPER, Utah — Great Harvest Baking Company works hard to keep things natural, from milling its own wheat and the natural ingredients in its baked goods to the Blue Sky renewable energy it buys from Rocky Mountain Power.

"We use only water, flour, honey, salt and yeast in our breads and other baked products, so our customers expect us to take a natural approach to our business," said Natalie Pennock, co-owner of Great Harvest Baking Company with her husband Jason. "Blue Sky fits in nicely with our environmental ethic."

Blue Sky provides Rocky Mountain Power customers the opportunity to bring more renewable energy into the region, and the energy generated from wind, biomass, solar and geothermal helps reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

Located at 217 E. 12300 S. in Draper, Great Harvest’s purchase of 10 blocks (or 10,000 kilowatt-hours) of Blue Sky during a period of 12 months provides environmental benefits equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 12 tons. This has the same benefit as planting five acres of trees or not driving 25,700 miles. In addition, Great Harvest outlets in Holladay and Salt Lake City are buying Blue Sky.

While Rocky Mountain Power already buys renewable power for its customers, Blue Sky is a way to bring even more into the system. It’s also one of the most popular green-power programs in the country, ranking second in the nation for the number of customers enrolled. In Utah, nearly 18,750 residential and business customers buy renewable energy. More than 48,100 customers buy Blue Sky in the western United States.

Businesses have two renewable options: Rocky Mountain Power’s standard Blue Sky Block offering and Blue Sky Quantity Savings. Blue Sky Quantity Savings allows business customers to buy renewable energy from Rocky Mountain Power for less, providing they purchase at least 101 blocks of Blue Sky per month for a year. More than 440 Utah businesses buy Blue Sky.

Enrollment is optional and customers can increase their participation or withdraw at any time. For more information or to sign up for Blue Sky, call 800-842-8458 or e-mail bluesky@pacificorp.com. Customers can sign up online at   www.rockymtnpower.net/bluesky.
