Anchor Inn sets sail for renewable energy with Blue Sky

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. — The tide was ebbing for the Anchor Inn, but in the last two years, it has experienced a profound renewal, going from a down-on-its-luck weekly rental motel to a refurbished classic rapidly becoming a lodging destination. Choosing a renewable energy source, such as Pacific Power’s Blue Sky program, was only natural.

“Until about a year ago, sustainability just was a word that I’d heard but couldn’t really define,” said Kip Ward, owner of the property in Lincoln City’s historic Taft district. “I’d always thought of myself as favoring the environment, but I hadn’t done anything tangible about it.”

The opportunity came when he purchased the Anchor Inn in 2005. Ward needed additional parking for his nearby business, which does employment screening. He got the parking, but also ended up with an aging motel. “It needed a lot of work, and I needed to learn the motel business from the ground up,” he said.

While remaking the motel into an energy-efficient operation, Ward also chose Pacific Power’s Blue Sky program. “Any thoughtful businessperson has to agree that long-term planning for your business requires an inhabitable planet,” he said. “Like most other people, I didn’t know what I could do, and then, I discovered Blue Sky.”

The Anchor Inn’s commitment to purchase 50 blocks per month of renewable energy through Blue Sky will have definite positive environmental benefits. Over the course of a year, the commitment avoids putting 60 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and has the same environmental benefit as planting 11,785 trees or not driving 128,550 miles.

In addition, the 22-unit Anchor Inn is replacing old windows with more efficient ones and reinsulating the building. All light bulbs also are being replaced with the compact fluorescent models that save energy and last longer. “We   encourage   energy conservation by our guests, asking them to turn off the lights when they go out and to use local shuttles whenever possible when they are going around town,” Ward said.

Blue Sky renewable energy comes from new, pollution-free wind, biomass and solar projects, the majority of which are in the Pacific Northwest. These facilities help offset emissions from traditional generation sources and stimulate even more investment in new renewable generation facilities.

Customers have a range of options when it comes to buying Blue Sky renewable energy: Blue Sky Block, Usage or Habitat. Buying just one, 100-kilowatt-hour increment of Blue Sky Block costs only $1.95 per month. Customers can buy as many blocks as they wish. Blue Sky Usage allows customers to offset all of their energy usage with renewable resources for less than a penny per kilowatt-hour, while with Blue Sky Habitat, customers buy renewable energy at the same rate as Blue Sky Usage, plus make a donation to The Nature Conservancy of Oregon to preserve native fish habitat. Large customers can buy renewable power in bulk at a discount through Blue Sky QS. Participation is optional, and customers can increase their participation or withdraw at any time.

Customers who want to sign up for a renewable power option   may call Pacific Power at 800-769-3717 or visit www.pacificpower.net/bluesky .
