Helms True Value Hardware Case Study

High-efficiency lighting saves on energy costs

Helms True Value Hardware in Selah, Washington, had outgrown the 10,000 square-foot location it had occupied since the family business was established in 1969. According to Brad Helms, who owns the store with his brother Troy, a remodel was considered, but “we decided it was a quick fix.” It became clear that relocating was the answer – and that building to suit their needs made sense. The business owners took advantage of Pacific Power incentives to install the most energy-efficient lighting available.

While building plans were in development, the Helms’ visited other hardware stores around the country to see what works best. On one of those visits, they observed the lighting that their contractor Total Control Electric, Inc. in Yakima had recommended for the interior of the new location – high-efficiency T5 high output fluorescents. Brad Helms said it was obvious they were the right choice for their project.

In addition to the high-efficiency interior lighting, Helms True Value Hardware also upgraded to energy-efficient fixtures in the store parking lot and exterior canopy.

The T5 high output lamps Helms True Value Hardware installed with the help of FinAnswer Express® offer energy savings of at least 35 percent among other benefits.

Helms True Value received $6,900 in FinAnswer Express incentives for its lighting project. In addition, the retailer is saving an estimated $2,850 in energy costs each year.
