Safety First

Yakima First Aid Contest

The annual company-sponsored “First Aid Contest” was held on Saturday, May 19, 1928. This was the first year women’s teams competed side-by-side with men’s teams from Hood River, Walla Walla, Yakima and other regional communities. Teams were judged in resuscitation, bandaging exercises and other first aid techniques. The Yakima Women’s Team, pictured in matching uniforms and big smiles next to an eastern Washington substation, earned the top score, besting the winning men’s team, also from Yakima.

Pacific Power continues to foster a culture of safety. During the first decade of this century, recordable incidents and lost-time accidents were down and attention to safety was up. Each year a safety improvement plan is designed to lead efforts to heighten safety performance. Part of the plan includes recognizing employees for improved safety performance. So, even though first aid contests are no longer in fashion, the importance of employee safety keeps getting stronger.
