Standards for Electrical Transmission

We are committed to providing our customers with safe, reliable and affordable electric service. Electricity is critical to modern life, including public health. Transmission lines are critical to ensuring service to our customers. They connect the company's diverse generating sources to sub–transmission and distribution lines which in turn connect with customers' facilities, i.e. homes, businesses, etc. Electromagnetic fields result whenever electrons are in motion. As a result, EMF is present wherever electricity is being transmitted, distributed or used.
                        

Research on EMF exposure from transmission lines has resulted in the adoption of some standards by international organizations and state governments to regulate magnetic field exposure:
 

  • International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety (ICES) - public safe magnetic field exposure limit -- 9,000 mG (milliGauss, a unit for magnetic fields)
  • International Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNRP) - public safe magnetic field exposure limit -- 833 mG
  • State -- Edge of Right-of-Way Limits
  • California - for magnetic fields from new or upgraded facilities, apply no- or low-cost field reduction techniques to new or upgraded facilities
  • Florida - For magnetic fields, 150 mG for facilities < 230 kV; 200 mG for 500 kV facilities
  • Idaho - no magnetic field regulations
  • Minnesota -no magnetic field regulations
  • Montana - no magnetic field regulations
  • New Jersey - no magnetic field regulations
  • New York - for magnetic fields, 200 mG > 125 kV
  • Oregon - no magnetic field regulations
  • Utah - no magnetic field regulations
  • Washington - no magnetic field regulations
  • Wyoming - no magnetic field regulations
