Maggie Gibson Plaza – Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives

Maggie Gibson Plaza Solar

Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives (PCRI) operates Maggie Gibson Plaza, a mixed-use building that provides income-restricted affordable housing, alongside commercial space for small, community-based businesses in Northeast Portland.

In 2015, PCRI installed 35 Oregon-made solar panels on the roof of the Maggie Gibson Plaza. The project complements a series of onsite energy-efficiency improvements including, new windows, LED interior and exterior lighting, Energy Star appliances, ductless mini-split heating systems, and electric water heaters all of which provide ongoing benefit for low-income tenants who are disproportionately impacted by utility expenses. The cost savings provided by the solar array will allow PCRI more financial flexibility for future capital investment in community redevelopment. In addition to reducing the cost to provide electricity to common areas of the building, this installation will help demonstrate the role of renewable energy in “Main Street” neighborhood development projects.
